Do professors take roll and if they do, how? Also, what are midterms like in terms of preparing to study and how does one take a midterm (ie: go to class and write answers on the paper where you bubble in answers)? (Sorry for stupid questions, but I'm a junior in high school and I was just curious)
Anonymous asked

Some professors take roll, some do not. For those that do, if it’s a small class, then the professor/instructor will manually take roll, while in a class like Chemistry 1A, they’ll take roll electronically, via the use an iclicker or of something similar.

Most midterms are taken on a set date in class. There are classes where the midterms are set to be taken in the evening, usually if the test will take longer than the normal class time. These times and dates are on the syllabus, so if there is any possible conflict, they either advise you to come talk to the professor about this issue.

Some midterms are completely free response/essay, some require only scantrons, or some have a combination of both. Before the midterms, the professor will usually give a practice midterm or previous midterms that he/she has given before.

Hope this helps!

Not much to say about the major but I do know that the classes are really awesome and always very insightful.

The housing website sucks at describing where is where at Foothill (laundry room, dining hall, Theme Houses, buildings, etc). For someone that didn't get to go to CalSO, it's a little difficult figuring out the dorm before move-in day. Any knowledge on those nine buildings?
Anonymous asked

For a lot of the whereabouts for all those necessities, your RA, or residential assistant, should or will be available to help you find your way around before school starts. It’s always fun to explore, but I can give my input as a former foothill-er.

Foothill is considered as the “Unit 4 area” which includes Stern, the all girls dormitories, and Bowles, the all boys. They all share the same dining hall, which is located on the southeast corner of Gayley Rd & Hearst Ave. It’s a little bit hard to see that, but the path to get there is either up that hill into Hillside circle or taking the stairs coming from the Stern direction — it’s a bit hard to describe exactly.

Aside from Stern and Bowles, Foothill itself is divided into two sections, Hillside and La Loma, as a bridge across Hearst Ave connects the two chunks. Hillside is on the same side as the dining hall and Stern, while La Loma (buildings 1-3) is across the bridge. This map helps a little bit. I can’t say exactly for Hillside, but the La Loma laundry machines are (I think) on a floor or two below the floor that leads you to the bridge. Once you walk across, the mailboxes are to your left with the small exercise room shortly after. At that point, you technically are standing above the dining hall, so you can just take the stairs down.

It’ll all make sense once you walk around. Grab your roomies and make an adventure out of it if you can.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your last week of summer!

I'm just going to throw this question in here and hope it gets answered xD
If I'm hoping to get into Haas, which statistics class is better: 20, 21, or 25? I'm not really sure what the differences are between the classes either. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
aww-nuh asked

I’m applying to Haas too, so I’ve also been asking around about the different stats classes. I don’t know what stats 25 is about - I was going to look at the class description in the at schedule.berkeley.edu, but apparently it isn’t being offered for Fall ‘11. (If anyone can answer this question, please feel free to jump in!)

At any rate, I’ve talked to several people who all say that it truly doesn’t matter which stats class you take. You won’t be given more or less opportunity over another person based on which you choose.

The difference between 20 and 21 is that 20 is a more general stats class and 21 is more business focused and intense. Personally, I am taking stats 20.

I hope this helps! :)

I can't find any information regarding general education requirements on the school's website. What are the courses taken for general education at Berkeley?
Anonymous asked

It depends on your college. I’m going to assume you’re in L&S and send you this link: http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/summary.html

If L&S isn’t your case, let me know so I can further help you! :)

Does Berkeley have a lot of cherry blossom trees in bloom around February?
Anonymous asked

You know, I don’t think we do… If someone else knows the answer to this, please share! As far as I know, I haven’t seen any around campus. Aren’t cherry blossom trees more of an east coast thing? I could be totally wrong, here…

Which would be easier ?
Transferring to Berkeley from a CC or State University?
OR..
Go to a state school, then grad school at Berkeley?
Anonymous asked

Berkeley is, by no means, an “easy” school to get into and I cannot give you a formula with means by which to get accepted, one way or another.

Hi! I got accepted to Cal and UCLA as a transfer student and I'm having a hard time making up my mind. I'm from the Bay Area so I'm familiar with the environment etc. already. I'm an English major but I really wanted to pick up a minor as well (I either want to go into public policy/government related stuff or else PR/media/journalism). I know there's a Media Studies major that's impacted -- but is there a minor?
Anonymous asked

There is definitely a media studies minor! (Says my roommate who is a media studies/legal studies double major.) If you have more questions about that program, just send me a non-anon message and I can connect you with her!

Also for the person who was asking if you transfer from a CC do they look at your high school grades etc -- they don't. Only your community college grades matter and AP scores if you want to use them. (SATs don't matter at that point either).
Anonymous asked

Hm, I definitely heard differently at some point. Thank you for submitting this information!

Guys, this just goes to show you that, while you can ask Berkeley Vision about most things (especially questions that regard our opinions), it’s always, always, ALWAYS best to check with someone at Cal (or elsewhere) for your hard facts.

You don’t want to make a mistake on something important because you relied on our tumblr! :)

Still, we do give out the most accurate information that we can - most of which is taken directly from the Berkeley website.

Best of luck to all of you!
